QUESTIONS I GET ASKED

As my work evolves and I post the photos on social media, I receive a lot of questions.  Thats good, because I appreciate that my work is getting noticed.

For instance, as the one featured here:

From my Introspection series…

Why is there text over the image? Is that a new direction? Why the montage? Why the color and why those colors?

These questions remind me of a true story:

Pablo Picasso admired the writer, Alfred Jarry, the  French writer, who made a habit of brandishing a revolver at parties and shooting people with blanks if he felt they were boring.

After Jarry died, Picasso bought the revolver from Jarry’s estate and continued the tradition. He would shoot art critics (with blanks) and anyone else who asked him the meaning behind one of his paintings.

I’m certainly not that extreme but I hope that the viewer bring their own life experience to the work and intuit for themselves.

Probably the most honest answer to the question as to why the montage, colors and sometimes text is that it feels more right to do it than not to do it. Emotion over logic as I set my imagination free during the creative process. I also pick up on the energy of the person I am photographing. As my good friend Tim Kennedy puts it…”I make transformations of reality, not mere illustrations.”

Next time, I will post about my encounters with someone whom I have made several portraits of and is still living outdoors.

Until next time:)
