INSPIRATION
“Hardening of the Categories Leads to Art Disease.”
I saw this quote at a Joan Mitchell exhibition in Baltimore, but it is attributed to many people including the great photographer, Eugene Smith.
Images are my inspiration, regardless of the medium or “category”. I learn so much from painters and sculptors as well as other lens-based artists. The medium and category doesn’t matter to me.
As a child, I was surrounded by art, artists and art books. Books on Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya and so many other figurative painters surrounded me. However, I have been also learning from abstract expressionist and action painters. I can learn so much from all of it.
There is so much to learn from painters and sculptors about how to make a great image. They have been doing it for centuries where as photography is relatively young. In addition, lens-based artist such as myself usually have to work with what’s there and pick and choose what to include, but painters have no limitation.
