ART AND HUMANITY

It seems unimportant, even irrelevant to talk about art with so much cruelty and chaos happening around the world right now.

What can art do that is useful?

In my opinion, art is a distinguishing attribute unique to humanity. It shows us ourselves with all of the good, bad and ugly.

Through reflection, art gives us hope.

I have received a few e-mails from friends about my new abstract work. Specifically, my newest body of work, Sentient.

Questions like, “They are beautiful abstracts but aren’t you getting away from your roots? What about the gritty (not my word) people you make portraits of—are you still doing that?”

Yes, indeed I still make portraits. In fact there are some new ones on the website now but I don’t post much on social media anymore. I feel it is my obligation to make visible those whom are invisible in our society. I have a gift for making people seen and I continue to use it and post them on my website.

However, my “abstracts” go deep into the roots of human emotion. Emotion is a large part of the portraits I make but I also need to explore emotion deep down, without figures or symbols—deep below the surface - before intellect intervenes.
